Saturday June 14th 11.30am – 12:30pm

Free to attend for members and non-members. Zoom details at the bottom of the article.

For lovers of art and Japanese ink painting join us for this special online talk and demonstration from master calligraphy artist Kōshū (Akemi Lucas)!

Beginning with a presentation about the history and techniques of sumi-e (墨絵), Akemi will also provide a live demonstration to bring this beautiful Japanese art to life before your very eyes!

Akemi Lucas began training in calligraphy (shōdo, 書道) at a very young age under the tutelage of Master Seizan Fujimoto. After qualifying as a calligraphy master at 24, Akemi was given the name Kōshū (紅秋; red autumn) and has had many high profile commissions for the likes of Kokoro Gin and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

She began to learn the art of sumi-e after qualifying as a master at the suggestion of her teacher, and found a whole new world of brush techniques and skills to explore and express her art.

In 2024 Akemi had her first book Sumi-e: The Mindful Art of Japanese Ink Painting published by Herbert Press, an imprint of Bloomsbury books and JSNW members are entitled to a 20% discount until June 30th 2025! JSNW members, please check your emails, next newsletter or get in touch at events@jsnw.org.uk for your discount code.

Akemi also teaches calligraphy and sumi-e courses online, with specialist residential courses available in Japan and by request in the UK. For more information visit: www.koshujapaneseart.co.uk
