Court Ladies, Women Warriors, and Courtesans.

A talk by best-selling author Lesley Downer.

Please join us on
Saturday 1st March at 2:00 PM.

At The KROBAR Manchester M13 9PG. (325 Oxford Road)

“The history of Japan is often all about battles and warriors, samurai, and shoguns. But women also played a prominent role. I will talk about some of the extraordinary women in Japanese history, starting with Himiko the Shaman Queen and the powerful empresses of early Japanese history, all the way through to the militant feminists of the Taisho period, with of course lots of lovely illustrations.”

Lesley Downer first went to Japan on the very first year of the Wolfers Scheme, which later became known as the JET Programme. She lived in Gifu City for two years, followed by many more years in Japan. She spent some 15 years researching and writing the Shogun Quartet, four novels set in the crucial years between the arrival of Commodore Perry and the Meiji Restoration, and discovered that the true story is a lot more complicated.

The event is £10 for Members and £14 for non-Members.

One Coffee, or one Tea, or a drink, is included in fee.

If you have any questions or are interested in attending, please get in touch at events@jsnw.org.uk.
